Reporters learned from CNOOC on March 8 that Kaipingnan Oilfield, the first deep-water deep oil field in China, was discovered in the Pearl River Mouth Basin, with proven geological reserves of 102 million tons of oil equivalent, which is also the largest oil field independently discovered in the deep-water field in China.

Become a new position for oil and gas exploration in China

In 2023, China's offshore crude oil output will exceed 62 million tons, of which the output from deep-water and deep areas will be less than 10%. Compared with the traditional exploration fields of shallow water and medium shallow layer, the exploration degree of deep water and deep layer in China is very low, and it is an important replacement area for the growth of oil and gas reserves and production in the future.

In the past ten years, China has independently built and put into production nearly ten deepwater oil and gas fields, including "Deep Sea No.1", "Haiji No.1", and Liuhua 16-2. At the same time, it has expanded into the field of deep offshore exploration, constantly strengthened scientific research, innovated geological understanding, and opened new reserves replacement areas.

Peng Guangrong, Chief Geologist of CNOOC South China Sea East Petroleum Research Institute, said: "We are trying our best to solve the exploration bottlenecks and problems in deep water and deep layer, and march towards the deep sea and the deep earth.". The discovery of Baodao 21-1 deep-water deep gas field and Kaiping South 100 million ton oil field in Qiongdongnan sea area has further revealed the huge exploration potential of deep-water deep field in China.

The geological conditions of China's offshore basins are far more complex than those of the Midwest onshore oil fields with the same burial depth. In addition, a layer of seawater covers the offshore basins, making oil and gas drilling difficult. When the drilling reaches a certain depth limit, the number of penetrating strata increases, the temperature and pressure conditions become harsh, the formation lithology becomes more complex, and the difficulty increases geometrically.
